Passionate about Timber

We understand Timber from planting and growing as a sapling to managing the tree as a valuable commodity with an end use. Whether it be for an Oak beam, table or a hand carved spoon.

Onsite consultations can be carried out all year round and we also offer training courses at our Riverside Project (due to re-open in April) located right here at Ridge Cottage HQ.

From tree to plank

Say yes to character

Timber is as important as masonry

In many Historic buildings still around to this day, timber can form the main structure. Each structure is unique so a bespoke solution is often needed for each case. You find holes in timber filled with cement again trapping moisture in the timber causing it to rot. Painted timber with old paints again traps the moisture behind the paint stopping the timber from breathing causing issues with rot again.

Discussions with the client onsite usually helps with finding out the initial problems and providing a solution. Timber expands and contracts and is a wonderful breathable and immensely strong material used and cared for in the correct way.

As you can appreciate a lot of timber in historic buildings was hand hewn, so to replace this with a sawn piece of timber would not necessarily be the correct replacement. Sawn timber is not as strong as cleft or hewn timber. Sawing cuts through the grains of wood. Cleaving and hewing follows the natural grains of the wood leaving the natural strength in the timber. This is why the Carpenters of old selected trees from the forest for each part of the frame and hewed the timber to get the natural strength in the structure.

Parts of rotten frames can be scarfed some parts need replacing fully.

If you just want to put some character back into a badly restored property then we can provide solutions for this whether it be a new beam for your inglenook fire place, hand hewn or milled or mock timber frame on your internal or external walls, ceiling joists and beams or a unique piece of sculptural functional furniture to enhance the feel of the property. We can source suitable timber, hand hew it or cut it on the Mill here at The Riverside Project to fit the brief we agree together.
